STAND ALONE COMPUTER

Refers to a devices that is self-contained, one that does not require any other devices to function. For example, a fax machine is a stand-alone device because it does not require a computer, printer,modem or other device. A printer, on the other hand, is not a stand-alone device because it requires a computer to feed it data.

NETWORK COMPUTER

a system for communication among two or more computer.

INTERNET

a worldwide system of computer networks - a network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information from any other computer (and sometimes talk directly to users at other computers).

WIRELESS COMMUNICATION

the transfer of information over a distance without the use of electrical conductors or wires. The distances involved may be short (a few meters as in television remote control) or long (thousands or millions of kilometers for radio communications). When the context is clear, the term is often shortened to "wireless". Wireless communication is generally considered to be a branch of telecommunication.

William (Bill) H. Gates III is co-founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Microsoft Corporation, the world's leading provider of software for personal computers.

  • wrote a program for the Altair computer, the BASIC interpreter - the first basic operating language for the computer. This software was the breakthrough and beginning of Microsoft.
  • Gates and Allen created SoftCard, which would be Microsoft's first formal invention. It was an operating system and computer language in one.

  • In 1980 MicroSoft purchased the rights for the Q-Dos system from Tim Paterson for $50,000, retailored it as DOS, and soon joined with IBM to create software for their computers. IBM's PC, released in August 1981, was the first time Microsoft had licensed software to a company. Gates soon began licensing to other companies like Apple, later creating the Windows 3.0 Version that would have multi-use features like graphics and spreadsheets.
  • created software application program like Lotus 1-2-3 and Microsoft Works for the Macintosh.

Honors and awards

2-03-2005 Bill Gates knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his contribution to the British economy. His titel will be 'Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire'. Thoug he is not allowed to call himself 'Sir' because of his USA citizenship but may suffix his name with KBE.
